Interim study proposal seeks to abolish lottery
The Arkansas Legislative Digest noted in its weekly news summary today that Senator Sue Madison (D-Fayetteville) has filed a draft bill with the Legislative Council that would repeal law authorizing a state lottery. The bill, drafted for the 2010 Fiscal Session, would also immediately abolish the Scholarship Lottery Commission and transfer funds appropriated for operation of the lottery to the Department of Higher Education to fund scholarships. The measure was filed as ISP 182 and will likely be on the Legislative Council's agenda for adoption at its August 21 meeting.

Sue Madison's dislike of the state lottery is more important to her than the majority of Arkansas voters who voted in the state lottery? Shameful. Madison, like others who hate America, evidently hates democracy, too.
Seems to me like Madison is following the will of the people. I haven't talked to many people who even want this lottery anymore after the debacle it has become.
From what I understand, Sen. Madison's bill would only repeal the enabling legislation--not the constitutional amendment approved by voters. If this is truly the case, then she's not going against a majority of Arkansans, she's merely asking for a do-over in the legislation. And it seems to me most Arkansans could get behind that, too.
