Local GOP goes negative in House District 67

With incumbent Rep. Steve Breedlove (D-Greenwood) opening up a double digit lead in a recent poll, the local Republican Party is hoping to close the gap by firing off this scathing press release critical of Breedlove earlier today. The Breedlove campaign responds with a press release of its own:
Breedlove sponsored and passed the largest scholarship program in the history of Arkansas, benefiting 57% of all Arkansas High School graduates. He wants to follow up with that by sponsoring legislation that will create a scholarship program for those who have served in combat.
Breedlove was the only Democrat in the House to oppose the governor's proposal to increase the severance tax. The governor will travel to Sebastian County for a formal and public endorsement of Breedlove.
Representative Steve Breedlove responded to a press release issued by Sebastian County Republican Chairman Jake Files accusing Breedlove of favoring gay adoption. "The allegation that I helped kill legislation that would have prevented homosexuals from adopting children and serving as parents is an outright lie," Breedlove said. “Jake Files and John Van Gorder should be ashamed of themselves." Breedlove said he has not in the past nor does he today support gay adoption. "As a Church of Christ preacher I strongly believe homosexuality is a sin," said Breedlove.
Breedlove explained that the vote Files refers to was a committee vote taken in the afternoon while Breedlove was on his way back to Greenwood to teach a Bible study class. "I put my responsibilities to my church first," Breedlove commented. "My vote wouldn’t have made a difference anyway. The measure was seven votes short and never in hope of passing."
Representative Breedlove also responded to Files’ reference to Representative Kathy Webb of Little Rock. "Representative Webb has donated to my campaign along with many other of my colleagues. One of her responsibilities of the House Democratic Caucus is to help fellow Democrats across the state," Breedlove explained. "I passed 70% of the bills I sponsored or co-sponsored due in large part to the fact that I have a good working relationship with the Democratic majority in the House of Representatives."
Breedlove said he was confident the voters of District 67 would see this smear campaign for what it is. "They know I have worked for them, even standing up to Governor Beebe and the vast majority of my colleagues when I voted against the severance tax."
Breedlove sponsored and passed the largest scholarship program in the history of Arkansas, benefiting 57% of all Arkansas High School graduates. He wants to follow up with that by sponsoring legislation that will create a scholarship program for those who have served in combat.

"The Tolbert Challenge" has been issued to both of the candidates for District 67 to complete the Family Council and the Right to Life Voter Guide. Read about it here...

Breedlove is going to have to answer voters on why he didn’t vote to ban gay adoption when he had the chance. His release says that he was on his way home to lead a bible study during the committee vote, but he is leaving out the fact that there was a committee meeting that same morning where he could have voted for the ban. Breedlove’s excuse that he was doing the “Lord’s” work rings kind of hollow when you know that he skipped two votes on this issue. Was he leading a prayer breakfast that morning? Is that why he skipped the first committee vote?
Additionally, it is hard to believe that Breedlove is serious about banning gay adoption when he takes political contributions from Kathy Webb. Webb is an open lesbian and has been the legislature’s most outspoken opponent of banning gay adoption. Why would Kathy Webb give money to Breedlove if she thought he really wanted to ban gay adoption.

it is hard to believe that breedlove is the so called conservative democrat as he goes around telling everyone, the proof is in the puding, sir. oh, and if you are so ashamed of your party, then why dont you change? and why are you having the dem gov. raising money for you, oh, sorry i forgot you will take money from anyone, just look at your expense report.
Dear MR. Breedlove:
How unfortunate that instead of reacting to the "so called scandel" you in turn lash out. if none of it were true, why did you just stand with that, why did you have to label vangorder and why did you have to pull your old friend down also.....from where i am standing YOU are the one that should be ashamed... And, sorry but the I am leading by double diggets is again that arrogance that so many are sick of... and you thinking you can just skate by because all of the media is bias, that your real record will never come out... well i hope you are wrong, at least for our sakes
Well today is the day Mr. Breedlove and the people of Sebastian County will tell you how they feel. As a former resident who still has family within the county I know in my heart that you cannot silence the people. Your smear ad mocking Mr. VanGorder with duct tape over his mouth was over the top. Those of us who support John know that duct tape will never keep him quiet. Maybe your hands were tied with duct tape and that is the reason that you were not in Little Rock voting on gay adoption?? When you took office you agreed to represent us, you are paid to do that. Maybe if you told the people of Sebastian County that your church comes first you never would have been elected in the first place. God should come first! ! Read your bible.
