I am completely aware and deeply appreciative of the fact that Arkansas is Clinton Country. Both former President Bill Clinton and Senator Hillary Clinton have been a critical part of Arkansas political culture for the last 34 years. The Clintons have been responsible for so many good things that have happened in Arkansas during that time the accomplishments are too long to list. Ties to the Clinton family are very personal to people in Arkansas. I am no exception to that rule. I vividly remember the July, 1990 night when Governor Clinton attended the wake of my father, Mike, at our home in Jacksonville. I understand the disappointment that many Arkansans feel about the results of the Democratic Presidential Primary.
I am asking all Hillary Clinton supporters in Arkansas to help unify our Party. Barack Obama needs your support to make Arkansas blue again. Our country needs you to stand tall and stop George Bush from winning a third term via his war ally, John McCain. The stakes are too high for our party to be divided in this pivotal election.
I have spoken to many of you in the last few months. You have told me what is on your mind. You are wondering whether Barack Obama will compete in Arkansas. You are wondering if Barack Obama can win in Arkansas. One thing is crystal clear: divided we cannot win.
Arkansas can be competitive in November. Barack Obama can win Arkansas. John Kerry lost Arkansas by nine points or just over 100,000 votes. I remember the Kerry campaign in 2004 (or rather the lack thereof). John Kerry never believed that he could compete in Arkansas and that became a self-fulfilling prophecy. I am also not interested in tilting at windmills. The latest Rasmussen poll showed Obama losing to McCain 57-33 in Arkansas. No non-southern Democrat has won Arkansas in the Presidential race since John F. Kennedy in 1960. I am not saying this will be easy. In fact, I am saying just the opposite. However hard our task may be, it is worth fighting for.
Why will 2008 be different? There are at least seven reasons. First, the Obama campaign has financial resources that the Kerry campaign could only have dreamed of having. Second, Barack Obama is a far more talented political candidate than John Kerry and the best thing about the long primary season is that Hillary Clinton toughened Obama up. Third, in every state that Barack Obama has engaged he has attracted significant support from disaffected Republicans and Independents. Fourth, Barack Obama has been right on the war since the very beginning and Arkansans don’t want to be in Iraq or the Middle East for the next 100 years. Fifth, Arkansas farmers are unhappy with McCain’s opposition to the recent Farm Bill. Sixth, John McCain is running a campaign looking to the past while Barack Obama has a vision for the future. Seventh, the stakes are just too high for us not to win.
Senator Hillary Clinton was a complete class act on Saturday when she endorsed Senator Obama. She reminded us all that taking back the White House is job one for Democrats.
If you need to take a few weeks off to process the end of the primary that is very understandable. But, please understand this, we need to combine our forces as soon as possible. Without your support, Arkansas will be a lost cause. With your support, we can put our country back on the right track again.
There have been a lot of outright lies spread about Barack Obama over the internet. You know the ones I am talking about. Well, we’re going to address those lies head on during this election. We’re not going to sit back and let the Republican attack machine go unanswered. I’m the kind of Democrat that believes if someone hits you once then you hit them back twice. When the Clinton’s were unfairly attacked over Whitewater we all rallied around them. Let’s rally around Barack Obama and turn back the Republican attack machine.
I have been a loyal member of the Arkansas Democratic Party since 1990. I have served as the President of the Young Democrats of Arkansas and now as a member of the State Democratic Committee. I am asking that you contact the State Democratic Party and let them know what you are willing to do to help. You can also go to www.BarackObama.com and sign-up to get involved. The Obama Campaign will soon be opening an office in Arkansas. If we stand together, we can win this state, win this country and change the fate of our collective future. Are you interested?
Sincerely,
